Gareth started playing the euphonium at the age of 8 at Warren Wood Primary School under the direction of Mike Fredericks, but by the age of 9 had been moved on to Eb bass. The best move he ever made!
As well as playing at primary school he also played for Poynton Youth Band under Les Hall and Louise Renshaw, both people to who'm he is grateful for everything they did to kick start his playing career. He stayed with Poynton Youth from the age of 10 to 19, touring Valkenbourg in Holland and Disneyland in Paris on more than one occasion. It was at PYBB he met friend Mike Eccles who took him down to Cheshire County Youth Band under Sandy Blair, where he played for two years, here he met many friends who played for Lions Youth and later Roberts Bakery Band.
Les Hall invited him to join Hazel Grove Band at the age of 13, where he played under Les for a couple of years in the third section before moving up to Whaley Bridge Band under the direction of Tony Wyatt, Poynton's principle cornet. His stay with Whaley was cut short when he was invited to join the BT Band at the age of 16. He played with BT for two years under Mike Fowles, playing many contests and concerts up and down the country, including the famous christmas concert at the Royal Albert Hall to a capacity audience, which was memorable.
From BT Gareth joined the Glossop Old band under Jim Cant where he played for a year or so before moving to The Marple Band, where he played under many conductors until 2010. Whilst playing with Marple he played for Poynton Band under Alan Lawton many times as well as helping out Bollington, Glossop Old and Hazel Grove at various concerts and contests including two National Final appearances. A brief stint on euphonium with Silk Brass followed his departure from Marple which then led to a break for nearly two years.
Gareth is really pleased to be back playing again, and is looking forward to exciting times ahead at Poynton; especially under the direction of Neil Samuel, and the challenge of switching onto Bb bass.
