About the Band

The Vernon Building Society (Poynton) Brass Band is one of the North-West's premiere brass bands.

​

Delighting audiences throughout the year with original and entertaining concert programmes, Vernon Building Society (Poynton) band are regular prize-winners at contests throughout the country. The band currently competes in the Second Section and are currently directed by Tom Hillary who developed his musical career in the United Kingdom.

Recent highlights in the bands diary have included:

  • Performing the World Premiere of The Anson. Composed by Jonathan Taylor, The Anson was commissioned by The Anson Engine Museum to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the internal combustion engine.

  • Being the last ever brass band to record in the BBC's famous Studio 7 on Oxford Road with a performance that was broadcast on BBC Radio 2.

  • Recording our most recent CD titled Dedication.

  • Finishing 2nd in the National Championships (1st Section) in Cheltenham in September 2016.

  • Finishing 3rd at Rochdale contest (2nd Section) in October 2024

  • Winning the British Open, Senior Trophy in 2019 at Blackpool Winter Gardens playing Triumphant Rhapsody.

  • Winning the best March at the Doctor Martin Contest and placing 2nd overall in 2019.

The Band rehearse twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday, 8.00pm to 10.00pm) at their own band room on Park Lane, Poynton.
