Emily Rowbotham

2nd Cornet

I started playing cornet at the age of 7 at Warren Wood Primary School. Within a few months I tried out Flugelhorn and loved it. After I had left primary school, I started Marple Hall High School playing flugel in 2 of the schools bands. Alongside this I joined Poynton Youth Brass Band on cornet; proceeding onto Flugel again from 2010-2018 playing in many concerts, competing in competitions and going on residentially and trips abroad. As well as Poynton Youth, I was a member of Stockport Schools Brass Band from 2010-2016 playing cornet and flugel where I had the opportunity of playing in Belgium at the Menin Gate in 2014, playing in concerts, making a CD and many competitions over the years. In 2014 I joined Fodens Youth Band on Flugel and it was the best decision I had ever made. Playing in a band with over 70 people, doing concerts with Fodens Band, doing a CD recording and many concerts was such an experience. The best conductors and sectional leaders just made my time there so enjoyable. I met the most amazing people and played the best pieces in the 2 years I played with them. I joined Reaseheath College in Nantwich studying Animal Management full time in 2015 and didn’t think I would have the time for band anymore. However I managed to stay in Youth Band and I also joined Tintwistle Brass Band. My playing improved massively in this time and I left Tintwistle and was offered a seat in Hazel Grove Brass Band in 2017. I played 4th man down with them for 2 years, did 2 Areas at Blackpool, 2 Whit Fridays and many other competitions and concerts. Towards the end of last year, I was asked by a friend and member of Vernon Band if I wanted to come down and have a play with them so I took the opportunity and was honoured that they wanted to audition me. I got the 2nd cornet seat and even though I’ve been in the band a couple of months. I’ve done a CD recording, many concerts and faced with the championship section Area test piece which I’m working so hard on. My favourite test piece is The Dark Side of the Moon by Paul Lovatt-Cooper, my favourite concert piece is Skylines by Paul Lovatt-Cooper. My banding highlight over the 14 years of me playing was playing a flugel duet at the Poynton Youth Band leaving concert with Mike Eccles. He had been my teacher for many years and wouldn’t be where I am without all he’s done for me.
